It has definitively abandoned the Gemarra and the Rishonim, and Torah study has degraded to a social dynamic of the Achronim among themselves. They are no longer able to distinguish between truth and distortion. They follow the self-proclaimed Gedolei HaDor like sheep in a flock. They have elevated meaningless humrot to fundamental principles and displaced true fundamental principles as a minority opinion.
Because they more or less imitate what the Tosafot say like nice children, but in fact they DO what the Achronim have codified, and that usually has only a distant connection to the Gemarra itself.
